In Cypress, California, at a busy intersection, a former Office Max location was remodeled into an indoor and outdoor dining venue. Pasadena-based architect firm McKently Malak was asked to undertake a redevelopment project intended to attract restaurants and food vendors. The firm decided to create an outdoor environment that would both lure and encourage diners to visit and linger.
Outside of the 13,700 square-foot building, the McKently Malak team constructed a contemporary space with some of the traits of an urban park. They combined metal, stone, and composite wood materials to create that modern look. Greenery lines the welcoming space, and illuminated light columns enhance the ambiance.
“The aim was to create an organic, comfortable, pedestrian friendly space,” said Michael Hidalgo, who led the project for McKently Malak. “It had to be somewhere people could relax and enjoy their meal.”
Luminis LumiSTIK Columns Enhance the Outdoor portion of the Space
The McKently Malak team selected Luminis’ LumiSTIK columns, to enhance the space. The product’s high impact acrylic diffuser and clean extruded aluminum base complement the surroundings. Some twenty-one LumiSTIK columns were installed for the project. Measuring 12 ft tall, the slim columns perfectly fit the contemporary character that the architect hoped to achieve. The streamlined scheme ensures the fixtures look as good during the daytime as they do when the sun goes down.
Aside from improving the space, the LumiSTIK products must adequately illuminate the area, which is busy with diners so diners and staff can avoid the obvious hazards of tables and chairs. Each LumiSTIK column delivers 8400 lumens and ensures that the area is well lit. The 4000K color temperature offers a soft, warm and inviting feeling for the evening diners.
“The lighting choice was based on two criteria,” said Hidalgo. “The aesthetic had to work; the lighting columns needed to look elegant and clean. And we needed the functionality; the seated area had to be well illuminated with a color temperature that was kind to the users and the surroundings.”
“The client has been very positive about the results,” Hidalgo concluded.
